how to add YouTube video clips in SMART Notebook

`Adding Video Clips (YouTube, etc) to your SMART Board Lesson / Activities

Mark Bennett (M. Bennett Consulting)

These instructions describe how to add video to your SMART Notebook lessons so the video clip actually resides on a page in your lesson or presentation.  This process is normally described as ‘embedding’ video into your lessons.  For most teachers, embedding video clips is a more desired solution than the alternative options, Linking or Attaching.  (‘Linking To’ or ‘Attaching’ video clips is done in the same ways we ‘link’ to websites or ‘attach’ pictures to emails.. it works, but it is not as smooth or integrated a solution as embedding the video into our lesson pages.)

The Short version:

  1. Identify a Video Clip that you want to include in your SMART Notebook lesson, and determine what format your video clip is in its present form?
  2. You must Convert that video clip into “.flv” (Flash Video) format and you must possess the video clip file on your computer (i.e. download it).  This can be done with free third-party file converter programs, or  free online file converters such as Zamzar.com
  3. Once you possess the video clip file, your clip may be inserted (embedded) onto Notebook pages via the Insert menu.  Select “insert” and choose “flash video file…” and browse to find your clip.  Also note that video clips may be inserted via Drag and Drop or Cut and Paste features.

That’s it, it’s easy!

Well, OK OK, since it’s NOT always that easy, let’s take a much more in-depth look at how this is done.  Here are the more detailed instructions..    (CONTINUED)

  Step-by-step Instructions:

STEP 1:  Identify a Video Clip that you want to include in your SMART Notebook lesson, and determine what format your video clip is in its present form.   Which scenario are you..?

Scenario A: “I have found a video on YouTube; I want that video in my SMART Notebook lesson.”

This is the most common scenario.  In this case, most YouTube-style online videos are already “flash” video file format.  So as long as you see the YouTube-style video you want on an internet site right now, we can proceed to step 2.

Scenario B: “I have a video on a DVD that came with my textbook or on a thumb drive or email that another teacher gave me…”   In this case, your movie clip is probably in one of the following digital video formats: “.AVI”, “.MPEG”, “.MOV” “.WMV” etc.   Many of these videos can be converted into “FLV” format, but in some cases they are digitally protected and file converters will not work.  Well, we proceed to step 2 and if it doesn’t work, we resort to “linking to” or “attaching” solutions and give up :)

Since Scenario A is most common,  we are going to focus the rest of this document on the solution for YouTube clips as an example.  If you are in Scenario B, your task may require a slight modification, but your process is very simlar and most of this document still applies to you.   (CONTINUED)

STEP 2: You must convert that video clip into “.flv” (Flash Video) format and you must possess the video clip file on your computer.  Translation: you need to download that YouTube video (possess it!) and make sure it’s in FLV format.  We are going to use a free online file converter, Zamzar.com, to accomplish this.  It is usually best to find your desired YouTube video in one internet window, and open a second internet window for our file converter website, www.zamzar.com

2A. First, find and copy the URL (address) of the desired YouTube movie clip:
